Sending for the marriage of Walter Jowett and Agnes Matilda Price would at least give you her father’s name. Enabling you to go back on her line.

    Marriages Sep 1888
    Jowett  Walter  Ecclesall B.  9c 370

I found this grave in the Anglican Section of the General Cemetery. Section L2  grave 139.

    Date of death/ Date of burial/ Name/ Age/ Status/ Occupation/ Address.

28 Oct 1896. 1 Nov 1896 Ann Beard aged 41 wife of Alfred Beard. Butcher. 4ct Cumberland St

9 Feb 1889. 14 Feb 1889 William Hawksworth aged 60 Wood Turner of 44 Well Lane.

19 Feb 1887 22 Feb 1887 William Henry Neil aged 33. Cutler of 1ct Cundy Lane, Porter St

8 Nov 1906. 11 Nov 1906 Irene Neil Jowett aged 5w Dau of Agnes Matilda Jowett. 1 Derby Terr. Heeley.

No date given for death. 20 Nov 1942 James Neil aged 64 died at 2 Herries Rd which is the Northern General Hospital.

This appears to be the family. I believe that William Henry is the father of James who married Fanny Hawksworth at St John’s church in March 1878. There is a birth registration for James in 1878 with a mother maiden name as Hawksworth. Her father is given as William on the marriage, which appears to be the William Hawksworth also in this grave.

    Hi

You don’t give the name of his parents, so difficult to say if this is the correct Thomas Richard.

St Johns, Park. 5 Sep 1883

Thomas Richard son of Thomas William and Annie Jackson. Father’s occupation Drayman. of 10 ct Bernard St. The GRO new index gives the mother’s maiden name as BRUNYEE and the marriage was registered in Thorne.

My preference is Find My Past as they have the Sheffield parish registers, and I find their searches more relevant than Ancestry.

I have found your Henry Mitchell in Brightside Bierlow Workhouse in 1901. This was know as Fir Vale Workhouse and later became the Northern General Hospital. The admission records for this workhouse were destroyed in WW2 due to enemy action.

Only the Ecclesall Bierlow admission records exist (Nether Edge Hospital)

    Mick.

There is a newspaper report which states that his wife and son were living with a cousin until they went into the workhouse.

Thomas was supposedly working away from home

The Ecclesall Bierlow workhouse admission registers have been transcribed by us and this is what I found.

    Ref NHS/21/5/6/1 page 87.
    5 Dec 1904..HIDES Mary E date of birth 23 May 1877. wife.
5 Dec 1904..HIDES Douglas. date of birth 28 May 1902.

Their last address is given as 7court 5 house Trafalgar St.

There might be more information in the actual register we only compiled an index.

    Mick.

Sheffield Petty Sessions would deal with this and the records are available at Sheffield archives. I’ll see if I have anything as we are just indexing the petty sessions.

    I have found a record. Reference MC/2/22…..Thursday 5 January 1905.

Complainent. Allen Dearden, Board of Guardians. Ecclesall.

Defendent: Thomas Hides. Deserting family wife and child.

This implies that the wife and child where in the workhouse.

Ann-Marie Are you wanting to come forward or go back?

Percy Sollitt was baptised at Owlerton 21 August 1889 born 6 Aug 1889. Son of Herbert Henry and Annie Sollitt of 23 Burnaby St. Father’s occupation Postman.

I have found this newspaper article from Sheffield Daily Telegraph 19 Jan 1916

Formerly a Sheffield Postman Mr Herbert Henry Sollitt who resided at 13 Ronald Rd, Darnall has been granted the Imperial Service Medal in recognition of  long and meritorious service. Mr Sollitt who now lives at Douglas, Isle of Man, joined the Post Office in Sheffield as a telegraph messenger over 30 years ago. Bit by bit he worked his way up until he became acting head postman. During these years Mr Sollitt spent the greater part of his time in connection with the Post Office at Hillsborough and Attercliffe. He only retired last year.

Did Percy also go to the Isle of Man and that is why he cannot be found in the GRO records after his birth registration.

The Nunnery Colliery occupied the land from Woodbourn Road up to and past The Makro.

Burial Arthur J Walkden aged 55 a labourer

Died at Nunnery Colliery. Buried Dec 14 1948 (general  ground)

Section KK grave no 107 Burngreave cemetery.

This appears to be a common grave as the other 5 burials all have different surnames.
