Sheffield’s Parish Registers

Parishes and Parish Registers

This page concerns the registers of the parishes of the Church of England.  Information about Roman Catholic and nonconformist records may be found elsewhere on this website.  For information about parish churches go to Sheffield’s Parish Churches.

The earlier registers of most Sheffield parish churches have been deposited at Sheffield Archives which acts as the record office for the Diocese of Sheffield.  Register books still in use are kept by the church.

Facsimile copies of many of the original registers are available on microfilm at Archives.  Filmed registers may be ordered for inspection through the Church of Latter-Day Saints Family History Centres around the world.  Sheffield Archives has entered into a contract with the subscription website Findmypast for the digitisation of its collection of parish registers.  You can search on the Findmypast website and download records.  You will need a subscription or you can pay to view using pre-purchased credits.

For a comprehensive listing of Sheffield’s Anglican parish churches, their origins, the dates and whereabouts of their registers and other church records, etc. see The Small Guide to the Parishes in the Sheffield Area.  You can purchase a copy from our shop on the GENfair website.

Parish register transcriptions

Society volunteers have transcribed thousands of entries from many of the registers of local parish Churches.  Check our up to date list of transcriptions on this website.  You will also find a number of parish register transcriptions at Sheffield Indexers.
