Social Networking – Growth of an Industrial Elite in 19th Century Sheffield

21 September at 2:00 pm

To begin our autumn session of talks, we welcome Dr Kate Faulkes who will explore the activities of a group of recently affluent industrialists (eg (Sir) John Brown) who sat on the Vestry Committees of Sheffield’s four Anglican Commissioner Churches between 1826 and 1856. It will provide an exploration of the networks they developed through mutual activity in and outside the churches and demonstrate how these networks were used by industrialists to move from affluent obscurity to civic dominance of the town by the 1850s.
