I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on a place called Hen Hole alias Hell Hole at Neepsend. Many family records refer to the place all mentioning it being at Harvest Lane End and near Neepsend Lane.
I found a Hen Hole mentioned on 1851 Ordnance Survey map which appears to fit the location. https://maps.nls.uk/view/102345217
Hen Hole is also mentioned in Reminiscences of Old Sheffield, Its Streets and people, edited by Robert Eadon Leader, 1875, p15-16. In the book a character says “I understand the name of the proprietor of one of the cook- shops there was Thornhill . He lived at a house down Harvest lane, popularly called T’ hen hole because there was a tradition that poultry feloniously obtained was pushed through a hole into his cellar at night.”
In 1831 a deed transferring property of Robert Winnell, one of my ancestors, of Sheffield, (deceased) to Francis Hoole of Sheffield, gentleman, of a messuage on the site of 2 messuages and a smithy at Hen Hole alias Hell Hole in Brightside Bierlow near Neepsend and Harvest Lane End, Sheffield.
I’m assuming given the location all these reference are to the same property.
As the saying goes “to cut a long story short” this property crops up in Kinsey and Winnell family deeds, wills and maps between 1702 and this transfer in 1831. Many of my ancestors living in this area from the late 18th century were gardeners. Any information would be appreciated.
