Walk Mill, Dore and Totley, Sheffield

The other day I found that Dore and Totley station was built on the site of an old walk mill. One of my ancestors gave his place of birth as Walk Mill, Derbyshire in the 1851 census and Walk Mill, Yorkshire in 1861. Both cases indicate a birth in 1827. Can anyone suggest the most likely parish church in which to find his christening and  in which civil parish and its county to look for it in the 1841 census? Incidentally, I have drawn a blank with Abbeydale.

You don’t give your ancestors name so I am unable to help with a possible baptism.

As Dore and Totley were both in Derbyshire at this time I would try: Dore Christ Church which has baptisms from 1813 although this was a chapel of ease to Dronfield, Derbyshire. It became a parish  in its own right in 1844.

Thanks for the info. As soon as I can get my hands on a copy of  Dore Christ Church registers I’ll start looking for my man. I try not to give the individual’s name when I am looking for sources as helpful people like you invariably go the extra mile and do a search themselves and I wind up feeling guilty  because I have taken advantage of their goodwill.

Well it’s been a long time so I hope by now you have found your answers.  I am a member of the Dore Archives Research Team and we are always happy to help.  I have undertaken research into the Fearnehough family, one branch of which, were living there in the early 1800s.
