It contains some fascinating stories about this Bank which eventually became part of RBS. In particular it has portraits and biographical details of many of the early Directors including:
- Samuel Bailey 1791-1870
- Thomas Watson 1772-1832
- Edward Smith 1800-1868
- John Rodgers 1779- 1859
- William Frederick Dixon 1802-1871
- Francis Newton 1796-1864
- William Watson 1803-1886
- Michael Joseph Ellison 1807-1898
- John Jobson Smith 1801-1878
- Mansfeldt Forster Mills 1821-1896
- Frederick Bardwell 1818-1890
- Henry Isaac Dixon 1820-1912
- Sir Henry Edmund Watson 1815-1901
- Samuel Roberts MP 1852-??
- James Henry Barber 1820-1902
- Frederick Fowler 1832-1898
- Frederick Charles Wilde 1850-1903
For obvious reasons I don’t wish to part with my copy but the book might be of interest to some members of the SFHS if they are not already aware. I note that a copy (not mine I might add!) is currently available on eBay for £20,

I am currently gathering information on a number of donors who played a pivotal role in the creation of the Cathedral Church of St Marie.
Among the key donors was Michael Joseph Ellison, who you mention as being one of the directors of the Sheffield Banking Company.
I would be very interested in any details about M J Ellison contained in Leader’s book.
I can be contacted at bob.rae@stmariecathedral.org.
Kind Regards
Bob Rae
