My grandfather James Newman vanished from his Sheffield home in about 1920 leaving behind two orphaned children and was never seen again. I am his only grandchild.

Despite extensive checks via Ancestry I have found no record of either his birth or his death. I do have his original marriage certificate from 5 June 1915 when he married Alice Funston. This gives his age as 35, his profession as spiral spring maker, and his father as Henry Vivian Newman (deceased). No record of a ‘Henry Vivian Newman’ seems to exist anywhere.

His daughter Olga Sylvia was born in 1916 and his second daughter, my mother Muriel Joan was born in 1918. Alice died in 1920 by which time James is described as a newsagent living at 233 Portobello Street. According to a duplicate marriage certificate he applied to join ‘Sheffield Equitable (sic) Druids in 1916.

That is all I know. Any suggestions as to how I could find out more would be hugely appreciated.

Is he the man who was living in a lodging house in Button Street in 1911?
