Hi Folks,
I’m looking for some advice on where to look next.
In 1851 my gt gt grandfather Joseph Martin Lashley, aged 24 born Sandal Magna, was living in Sheffield with his widowed mother Lydia, head of house aged 65 born Sheffield, his wife and daughter, and his sister Ann Lashley aged 36 born Sheffield.
In 1841 14 year old Joseph M was living with Joseph, (proven to be his father from baptism records) and Lydia, both aged 55. All 3 born in Yorkshire.
I am looking for the marriage of Joseph and Lydia. The only thing I can find is a marriage in St Mary’s Newington (Southwark) of a Joseph Lashely to Lydia Souter on 8th May 1809. The vicar seemed convinced that Joseph was Lashley and altered the register to match Joseph’s signature, making a note of same underneath (original of Ancestry). Now I have found a baptism on 7th April 1789 of a Lydia Sowter, either at St Paul’s or ‘Sheffield parish’.
I don’t know where to look for further evidence that would prove or disprove that the marriage in London was my couple. Any ideas? I’ve looked for marriages of Lydia Sowter’s siblings in the hopes of finding a Lydia Lashley as witness but no luck. I have Lydia Souter’s signature from 1809, might there be a signature somewhere to compare against?
Just for completeness, Joseph was buried in St Pauls in 1842 (and presumably moved to Abbey Lane in the 1930’s) and Lydia in a paupers grave in the General Cemetery in 1857.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
