Ann-Marie Are you wanting to come forward or go back?

Percy Sollitt was baptised at Owlerton 21 August 1889 born 6 Aug 1889. Son of Herbert Henry and Annie Sollitt of 23 Burnaby St. Father’s occupation Postman.

I have found this newspaper article from Sheffield Daily Telegraph 19 Jan 1916

Formerly a Sheffield Postman Mr Herbert Henry Sollitt who resided at 13 Ronald Rd, Darnall has been granted the Imperial Service Medal in recognition of  long and meritorious service. Mr Sollitt who now lives at Douglas, Isle of Man, joined the Post Office in Sheffield as a telegraph messenger over 30 years ago. Bit by bit he worked his way up until he became acting head postman. During these years Mr Sollitt spent the greater part of his time in connection with the Post Office at Hillsborough and Attercliffe. He only retired last year.

Did Percy also go to the Isle of Man and that is why he cannot be found in the GRO records after his birth registration.

      Hi Angela

Thank you so much for this info – I never knew anything like this re Herbert Sollitt ( my gr gfather).

I know that Herbert married again to Gertrude Sarah Sanders  12.01.1913 @ Holy Trinity Darnall. Percy was a witness to this….I am not sure when he (Herbert) moved to IoM, but his other son Kirk was living in Onchan IoM 1916 – his daughter Marion was born there, as was her son Ivan Kirk Sollitt.

Herbert died in 1946/ Gertrude died 1951 and Ivan died 1999 – they are all in St Peters churchyard Onchan.

Re Percy – I have found a Percy Sollitt in 1911 census – where he is listed as a servant in an asylum – additionally, I note that a Percy Sollit  enlisted as a private with Northumberland Fusiliers 1914 – 1918 but nothing else.

I cannot find anything about Percy on the IoM.

Re Kirk Sollitt – he died in Ramsey Cottage Hospital IoM aged 32 – I cannot find any details re graves/burials.

Consequently, I would be extremely grateful, if you can find anything going forward re Percy and anything re Kirk Sollitt re his last resting place

      With grateful thanks

      Ann Marie.

It would appear that Herbert Henry married more than twice, there is a marriage in the Sept Q of 1911 to Lucy Woodmansey. A possible relative of his first wife Anne.

Annie SOLLITT aged 45 wife of Herbert Henry Sollitt. Died at 17 Ronald Road. Buried 12 May 1910.

Lucy SOLLITT aged 34 wife of Herbert Henry Sollitt. Died at 17 Ronald Road. Buried 3 October 1911.

Minnie SOLLITT aged 45, Spinster. Died at 176 Broomspring Lane. Buried 18 March 1943

Sidney C BARLOW aged 60 retired. Died at 176 Broomspring Lane. Buried 8 February 1945.
