anitaquinn1961ParticipantHoping someone can help, my Nanna is listed as a servant in a private home on the 1921 census. We were always led to believe she never worked and stayed at home to look after her parents and family. Does this mean she had a job in another house? or is this how her family saw her seems very mercenary if it is.

AnonymousInactiveHi
Are you certain this person is your relative!

anitaquinn1961ParticipantThanks for replying, yes she is my relative as all the other family members details tally as well. But I’m always discovering that info provided by my family is not always true.

Your own close family may provide you with information passed on to them which may be incorrect.
Check the 1911 and previous census information and do comparisons.
I am assuming you know about the 1939 register, check it out if you haven’t done already.
Birth Marriage and death certificates provide lots of information, but you’ll need to purchase these.
If you are serious about research start by asking everyone for copies of all their certificates. The other thing is talk to all your relatives now and write down all the information they give you.
I so regret not talking more to my mother and grandmother when they were alive. The problem in life is that we are living our life and forget some of the more important things.
It’s a great hobby
Best of luck

anitaquinn1961ParticipantThanks for all your advice it is an interesting hobby. I’ve used the 1939 Register quite a lot and moved my research further on. I wish I’d asked family members more questions, but some were very reluctant to talk about the family. I’m glad we are more open these days.
Good luck with your research too.
Best wishes
