Hi John,

The Sheffield Archives is the most likely place to find records of Wesley College – their email (in normal times) is archives@sheffield.gov.uk.

“The Wesleyan Proprietary Grammar School, commonly known as Wesley College at Sheffield was founded in 1838 and occupied purpose built premises on Glossop Road. It was founded by Rev. Samuel Dousland Waddy (1804 – 1876) to “supply a generally superior and classical education, combined with religious training in the principles of Methodism’. It later became a college of the University of London. In 1905 it was purchased by Sheffield Council and merged with the city’s Royal Grammar School to form the King Edward VII School.” I attended King Edward VII school in the 1970s.

A Percy Brook organised a Grand Charity Concert at the Surrey Street Music Hall in November 1897, in aid of the Childrens Hospital, with the asistance of Miss Bertha L Longbottom (conductress of the Ladies Mandoline Band). Percy’s capacity was Hon.Secretary.

Cheers,

Edmund
