Dear Name Muxlow,
My mother, Mona Augusta Radcliffe Kenyon was born either in Holmfirth or Sheffield in 1907. Her origins on her father’s side were a mystery, but 4 relatives have found contrasting family traditions:
1. My Aunt Kathleen, just before she died aged 104, whispered in my ear: “your Grandfather’s name was Muxlow, your Grandfather’s name was Muxlow”.
2. An elderly cousin reported: “Mona’s father was a surgeon at the Sheffield Royal Infirmary and rode Grandfather’s Radcliffe’s horse and trap.”
3. “Mona’s father was called Muxlow and sold flour to Grandfather Radcliffe, a baker who moved from Holmfirth to Sheffield, famous for his ginger snaps”.
4. (doubtful) “He held an important position in the Head Post Office”.
It seems very probable that John William Muxlow, born in Sheffield 1904 within 3 years of my mother, could be my mother’s half-brother.
Do any of the above traditions relate to any of your own records? I would be fascinated to know!
Incidentally my own close family are both descended from and progenitors of celebrated musicians.
Kind regards
Keith Ramsell
P.S. My own DNA records are available if required.
