I have been stonewalled by my grandfather for years.

According to the age on his marriage certificate in 1923, he was born approximately 1895 and he stated he was born in Sheffield.

His father was named as Leonard Green, occupation accountant. No mother’s name was given.

Although to date I have purchased about 5 birth certificates matching Sidney’s name, none are the person I seek.

In the 1901 census for Aston, Birmingham, he is showing up as a 6 year old boy, living with his parents Leonard and Ellen, sisters Margaret 15 (who I know for sure he had) and a younger sister Louisa who I didn’t know he had, aged 4.

Although he has his name on his marriage certificate as Sidney Robert, on this census, they only say Sidney.

According to the census record, all children were born in Sheffield.

It’s also interesting that in 1901 Leonard was not an accountant, but a Refreshment House Proprietor.

Sidney died when my mother was only 11 years old, but she did recall that his birthday was on the 2nd April, what year though?

I am frustrated beyond belief, and am at a standstill. I don’t know Ellen’s maiden name, nor where she and Leonard were married, so I can’t skip Sidney and go to the next generation and try to work back. And with a surname of Green, any search returns hundreds of records, just not the ones I am looking for.

If I could access parish records, that would be good, the BDM records don’t give any parent details, so you are stuck buying certificates that are of no use.

I am located in Sydney Australia, so if there are any locals who could offer some guidance, I would be very appreciative.

      Hi

I have been looking at this and have found a family who seem to match but the father is William.

Don’t put too much emphasis on the census spelling of Sidney as these are the enumerators books, so copied from the original household forms. Only the 1911 is the original filled in by the householder.

There appears to be many matches with this family.

William GREEN and Ellen FOY married at Manchester Register Office in 1880

Margaret Ann birth registered Ecclesall Bierlow March Q 1886 mother’s maiden name FOY

Sydney Robert birth registered Sheffield December Q 1892 mother’s maiden name FOY

Mary Louisa birth registered Sheffield Setember 1895 mother’s maiden name FOY.

I also found these two baptisms at St Mary’s Roman Catholic church Sheffield.

Green, Maria Louisa of 16h Shepherd Street, born 1895-07-00.
Baptised July 31, 1895, by Eugenio Gavin at St Vincents, Sheffield Centre. Parents names are Helena Foy & Gulielmi Godparents: Catherina Asken :Page No 105

Green, Sydney Robertus of 16h Shepherd Street, born 1895-07-00. Baptised July 31, 1895, by Eugenio Gavin at St Vincents, Sheffield Centre.Parents names are Helena Foy & Gulielmi. Godparents: Catherina Asken :Page No 105

      Names are in Latin.

I know that the ages do not match the 1901 census exact…but I think it would be worthwhile trying to rule this family out, as there are many coincidences with the children’ s names.

When, where  and who did Sydney Robert marry ?
