John Ruskin was a Victorian writer who searched for beauty in the world around him and who founded a museum for Sheffield workers who had little to inspire them.  He filled it with a collection of artworks\, illustrated books and minerals – the collection is owned by the Guild of St George.

The focus of Mike’s presentation are the reasons why much loved landmarks are demolished\, as well as querying whether some of them could have had a future.  In addition\, he draws attention to some buildings in the city which are currently giving cause for concern.

Opened in 1872 with 720 beds and with a nurses’ home built on site in 1893\, Middlewood was also known as the South Yorkshire Asylum\, West Riding Asylum\, Wadsley and Wadsley Mental Hospital.  During the First World War it became the Wharncliffe War Hospital and was designated the Wharncliffe Emergency Hospital in World War Two.
